Laroche Groupe takes is name from the principal’s great, great grandfather: Joseph “Bonpa” Laroche. Joseph Laroche made his fortune in Antwerp at the end of the 19th century by establishing L’Ancre Belge, the first shipping insurance company to specialize in insuring the new crude oil tanker fleets of an emerging global petroleum industry. An entrepreneur and bon vivant, Joseph was fond of champagne and was always nattily dressed in three piece suits and spats. Joseph was spontaneous and fun-loving by nature. According to legend, one morning, while having morning coffee with his business partner and still wearing his slippers, the two decided that they simply had to go to Paris, and immediately at that. And so they boarded the next train from Antwerp and returned 4 days later still wearing their slippers.
